2021

In 2021 I exhibited new work at Bircham Gallery, in an exhibition with Barbara Gittings, that contained to explore some of the themes from Tracing Shadows.

“Broad and Wide, the dark tides” (Side and wide, wonne wægas)

 Map series

Inspired by old maritime maps of the Essex and Norfolk coast. Some incorporate hand-written text drawn from Old English poems and other texts that refer to sea-faring or flooding.

Dye monoprint, pigment ink and stitch on antique linen.

Creek

This series features imagery of the tidal creeks of Burnham Overy State in Norfolk. These creeks are constantly moving and changing course in the soft muds in a facsimile of the process that has shaped the course of East Anglian river estuaries over centuries. The layering of prints based on photographs of the creeks taken over many years alludes to this process.

Screen print and stitch on antique linen.

Emergent Occasions

A continuation of the work developed for Tracing Shadows. Bradwell-on-Sea is at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary facing the North Sea over extensive mud-flats. It has been a site of human activity stretching back to the Mesolithic period and there have been many archaeological investigations in this area. There a number of “post alignments”, some dating back to the Saxon era. Their original purpose is now completely obscure and they are alternately exposed and submerged by the tides.

The work features layered screen prints of these posts at different phases of the tide. Dye, acrylic and stitch on antique linen.
